Sure I love my hard core punk & my "emo" (AKA post hard core) but I have a soft spot for skinhead punk rock / Oi! Oi! Oi! music!
The albums in this drawing are
Anti Heros - That's Right LP
Cockney Rejects - Greatest Hits Vol.1
The Oppressed - Dead and Buried LP
Angelic Upstarts - Teenage Warning LP
Business - Suburban Rebels LP
Blitz - Voice of a Generation LP
the Last Resort - A Way of Life: Skinhead Anthems LP
Combat 84 - Orders of the Day LP
the 4 Skins - The Good, The Bad, & the 4 Skins LP
sure this is a list of records that everyone who is in the know already knows are great, a lot of people rightfully criticize a lot of oi! bands for the lyrical content, but I still appreciate that these bands are coming from a working class stand point & they tackle topics we can all agree with like all coppers are bastards! When it comes down to it, the music is great & it's fun to sing a long to even if I am not a fan of capitol punishment! Let me make this clear I am a fan of the Fresno, CA band Capitol Punishment not the death penalty & by death penalty I don't mean the Belgium metal band...
I have to admit I haven't really kept up with Oi! as a sub genre but every year I buy a few records that fit into that category, for example I love Hard Skin, I love the first Dropkick Murphys LP, I dig everything I have heard from Bonecrusher, the Stomper 98 / 45 Adapters 7" is fantastic, the Oxblood . Templars 7" is one of my favorite records, & I'm sure there is a zillion more, but I just can't think of them off the top of my head... if you know of an Oi! band I should check out let me know...
I must mention I criminally left off Sham 69 & the Cock Sparrer LP Shock Troops... I intentionally left off Skrewdriver because even if you ignore their politics I still find them to be a mediocre punk band that probably would have been forgotten if it wasn't for Ian Stuarts shitty politics. Yes, I do think it's lame to be racist, by the way if you are racist be consistent, I fucking hate when I see a racist skinhead leaving Robertos Taco Shop with a burrito in hand! Also, if you want to listen to UK punk sung by a guy that gargles with whiskey, razor blades, and sandpaper, I think Leatherface does a much better job at it ....
OK, I might skip the McRad show because I want to wake up early and go hiking but if you go enjoy it for me!
